best system for running continually for say 24 hours I use a Heart Interface inverter heartinterface.com Cruising Equipment cruisingequip.com sells them and also has system design and support info. The Heart Interface (there are a couple of other inverters too) is the brain in the system. Hook it up to 12 volt batteries and the local utility power and you are set to go. It is just like a big UPS. When the utility power goes away it automatically switches to battery power. It works fine with computers. I have several computers and other electronic equipment in such a system and the switching works fine. Twenty four hours is a long time to go on battery power. You will need a large bank of batteries. Get 300+/- amp hr gel batteries and wire matched batteries in parallel to get larger capacities. You must analyze your power needs. Size the system at twice your needs. For example if you need 1000 watt hrs of juice...design for 2000 watt hrs. If you discharge a lead acid battery all of the way you will drastically reduce the life. Gell batteries will withstand deep discharge better than liquid lead acid. Lead acid is still the best bang for the buck in battery technology. I would augment the design with a small generator. With a small generator you can reduce the size of the battery bank. Let the inverter take care of switching when the power goes out. Then if the outage is extended turn on the generator to recharge the batteries. Zeuspaul
