The Guards are carefully chosen for their dedication to Islam. Only the military is independent although they also have to undergo Islamic indoctrination. The only hope for the people of Iran is that someone high up in the military decides to go against the Guards and Basijis. It took a year to overthrow the Shah and the opposition had Khomeini (who was in exile but still communicating with his followers) and the Mujahadin to fight against the military and the Savak (the Shah's police force), who protected the Shah.

The Guards, Basiji, police and Hezbollah are all armed. The military so far has stayed out of it. The people/demonstrators are not armed and they don't really have a leader.

Mousavi will be dispatched shortly for treason and sedition, as will all his supporters who can be identified.

All the people have is the desire for freedom and Neda as a symbol. Doesn't mean they can't bring the mullahs down but it will be even worse than it was back in '79 because the Shah didn't massacre people - just arrested them. The mullahs will kill. They killed 30,000 people during the '89 uprising while the world stood by.

The difference between then and now is the internet and communications - the world really is watching closely this time but people will still disappear - especially anyone who shows any sort of leadership.
