We got Saddam as a result of a lucky break, and possibly the $25 million dollar reward. The military pressure in and of itself did not get Saddam. It was an informant and a lucky break...soldier stumbling on his spider hole hatch.

Even the Bush administration said over and over...that getting Saddam, or OBL for that matter was not that important. Removing him from power was the important thing.

Continued pressure from the US and cooperation with the UN could have gotten us pretty much to where we are today...without the war. Saddam could have been forced out...from within. If the Iraqis hated Saddam they should have taken him out themselves. Certainly there were many opportunities to do so.

So now that we have taken the war option...now what? Rumdfeld says we're going to let go of the bicycle seat and let Iraq do what they will...they may ride on or crash and burn.

We're going to let go soon, and we will see what the result of this invasion will be.

It certainly was not to stop an imminent threat to the US. So what it's turned out to be is an exercise in nation building. The very thing that Bush said he opposed in 2000.

I believe that all of this could have been accomplished through means other than war. But if it came down to war...it should have been with a broad coalition of nations...including muslim nations. Entering into the war the way we did for the reasons we did was plainly bad policy.

What we have wrought in Iraq is a wild card. We don't even know what we will get for our efforts. That's because we had no clearly defined plan for the post war. No coalition. No UN. No NATO. And no leadership from Bush.
