No doubt the energy prices are a big factor.
I find myself driving less, driving slower, turning off lights and using perhaps 25% less energy. If everyone does the same the effect will be muted. This country has been wasting so much energy. Go to any other country and see the difference. We leave our lights on all night, empty refrigerators humming, air-condition everything, etc.
So turn off the AC (or down at least), drive less, carpool, drive slower and any time you don't need something turn it off. The oil companies will be flash with cash which is why I own some of their stocks, but the actual hit will only be bad for those particular industries which energy-guzzle. I feel bad for them but they must adjust. Also food prices will rise a bit but they're so cheap now I'm not worried. Again, go to Europe and see the difference in food prices. We have the cheapest life-style of any industrialized nation by far. So maybe buy Costco stock if it's not run up yet, but don't worry too much.
These are the things people do more of in a recession.

1) Grocery shop instead of dine out
2) Look for discounts
3) Drive less and travel less
4) Go to movies and watch TV
5) Telephone call instead of going to see people
6) Refinance assuming low interest rates
7) Cut down on luxury and major purchases
8) Fix the old car instead of buying a new one
9) Buy a Ford instead of a BMW
10) Spend more time on the internet

Anything else?
