I don't see how this technique could be pattented but it could be a tool for building loyalty and becoming a standards setter similar to what Microsoft does in several software products. S3 has over 50% of the market which is enough to command significant interest from software developers. I agree that this apporach makes brilliantly simple sense. Why not load commonly used tecture and object elements onto a Cd that the user can install into a library on the HD? I'd buy that.

Let's face it, moving to 56K modems is not going to be a development that will revolutionize web brousing. Even when using ISDN at 128K, many web sites are miserably less than dynamic - BORING for the average couch potato not yet interested in the web. Get 60% to 80% of the content onto the hard disk and I bet a 56K modem will start to make the web a much better experience. It seems that there is no practicle limit to how far this concept can be extended. Disk drives, DVDs and other mass stroage media are cheap enough now and are due to get up to 10X higher in capacity and cheaper over the next few years. It will be several years before ADSL, cable modems or some other technology are a significant share of the market so that internet bandwidth is commonly available. Even when those technologies come along, the evolution of this approach will likely fit right in to provide an even richer environment than otherwize posible.

The key to the techniques success is the adoption by developers. This looks like a natural for adoption by several of the developers of internet enabled games - it should deliver a lot of pazzaz to their programs and that will prove to be competitive. Will it become a standard practice for web development? That will take the major web site development software like MS FrontPage and NetOjects Fusion to get on board as well.

An excellent new strategy by the industry leader! No resting on past accomplishments or old strategies here!
