Venture capitalist Tom Perkins thinks that if democracy was the least bit principled, millionaires would get a million more votes than the average working man.
At a speaking engagement in San Francisco on Thursday, Perkins proclaimed that, "You pay a million dollars in taxes, you get a million votes."
"How's that?" he added.
Perkins also believes that the wealthy need better protection from the vindictive, struggling masses. In an open letter published in the Wall Street Journal last month, the billionaire venture capitalist argued that the persecution of the rich is equivalent to the Nazis treatment of the Jews, and that a "progressive Kristallnacht" is imminent if hatred of the 1% continues.
Perkins apparently believes that the best way to combat the impending BLANK is to give the rich even more power.
"The Tom Perkins system is: You don't get to vote unless you pay a dollar of taxes," he told the audience on Thursday. "But what I really think is, it should be like a corporation."
According to CNN, "The audience at the Commonwealth Club reacted with laughter."
Perkins, however, wasn't joking. After the show, he told a reporter that, "I intended to be outrageous, and it was."
It's unclear when, exactly, Perkins paranoid delusions began to materialize, although the re-election President Obama certainly didn't appease his skepticism.
"For his part, Perkins shows no signs of backing down from his argument that the rich in America are under attack," CNN reported. "Perkins said Thursday that the trend has grown since the election of President Obama -- who he described as an 'amateur.'"
According to The Huffington Post, Perkins radical beliefs aren't considered particularly outrageous by his fellow millionaires and billionaires.
"What's more, other people said out loud in public that they agreed with Perkins' sentiment," the HuffPost reported. "Rich guys from real estate mogul Sam Zell to billionaire Wilbur Ross piled on, claiming the one percent is getting picked on unfairly. The WSJ also stuck by Perkins, writing in an editorial that while his Nazi comparison was 'unfortunate,' 'the liberals' lack of tolerance for rich people is verging on dangerous."
