Unfortunately Iran swapped one totalitarian state (the Shah) for another (the Ayatollah).

This is a good article on human rights in Iran in the 70s. Iranians apparently had a lot of religious freedom under the Shah -- in fact, many non-Muslim Iranians were part of his government and ran the oil companies -- unless you were part of a sect that protested against him like the Baha'i. Many of those same Iranians of non-Islamic belief saw the writing on the wall and fled with him to America to places like New York and Los Angeles.

Interesting enough, what did the Shah in was rampant inflation and land reform changes that displaced a lot of Iranians who then looked to either Marxism or Islamic fundamentalism as ways to vent. The thing that broke his regime were the secret police crackdowns.
