Larger heavy bombers are so expensive that it makes sense to keep them around as long as possible. The B-52 might have a problem penetrating modern defenses (even with its electronic upgrades), but there aren't many of those around the world (and we have the ability to suppress them), and they are not owned by people we've been fighting. And even if we do go to war against a country with better defenses, the Buffs will still serve as missile trucks.
