I cannot point you to the precise law right now...but as I recall it is in US Code, Title 10.

Our government has the authority to call on every able bodied man to protect and defend the Constitution of The United States.

How wonderful that your friend felt free to speak.
That is imo a result of two things.
The first was Gulf War 1. The Americans who kicked Saddam out of Kuwait did much to restore our Armed Forces Dignity and the individual pride of those living Vets who served in combat.
Second reason is the Swiftees. They explained the Kerry Vietnam lies as well as could be hoped for. Now, finally, all Nam Vets feel free to speak about their experience.
