Gold coins will be minted well before distribution in 2002 along with paper and regular coinage, but the measure is still subject to further approval.

Central bank gold loans could be recalled to supply the mint with bullion, and the CBs may further reign in their bullion loans upon commencement of the euro. One would think the dawn of a new currency is not the time for central banks to have large amounts of gold on loan for speculation in bond markets.
