CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa Iowa's ethanol production will soon reach a milestone.
According to the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association, output from the state's 21 ethanol plants this summer is expected to equal the amount of petroleum-based gasoline that Iowans use.

Iowans consume about one-point-five (b) billion gallons of gas in their vehicles each year. Annual ethanol production for 2006 should reach one-point-six (b) billion gallons.

Six ethanol plants are under construction in Iowa, with two of those scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.

Ethanol demand has been encouraged nationwide by air pollution requirements in New York, California and other areas.

About 40 percent of the gasoline sold in the United States this year will be blended with ethanol, compared with 33 percent in 2005.
