BRICS is becoming a huge block. It is possible that KSA hopes their membership in that org may help neutralize the threat from Iran.

Obama’s Iran deal sort of threw the KSA under the bus. They can’t allow Shia Iran to be only Islamic nuclear power in the region - they would need nuclear weapons themselves (and, most likely, other Sunni nations in the region would want the same. Iran knows this - which, quite possibly, is the reason they aren’t building nuke weapons yet).

A few years ago, when “someone” destroyed an important part of the Saudi energy infrastructure - the incident was allowed to “die” a natural death. Nothing was done about it. Silence.

Than, there was the Khashoggi incident - for which they punished the perpetrators - but no one believed them…. All in all, we haven’t been very supportive of the KSA - and their current ruler.
