If you're a lead plaintiff, it means that you will actually be involved in the prosecution of the suit. I assume that the lawyers look for the most "representative" plaintiffs to fill this role. As much as I hate to admit it, the only people who really make out in these cases are the class lawyers. You can, however, "opt out" of the class and pursue your own remedies. There's a nightmare scenario.

The bottom line is that the lawsuit(s) will yield nothing of any value to the shareholders in terms of compensation. They may, however, focus enough attention of the failings of current management to effect a change on that score. Unfortunately, effecting the change in such a public way only hurts in the short to intermediate term. On a longer term horizon one would think that axing the current group and replacing them with well-respected managers (assuming such are willing to jump into the quagmire) would be a major PLUS. All IMHO, of course.
