Compaq going into the cellular phone and pager market? Can anyone comment on how this would be a good move? From the article:
[quote begin] Pagers and cell phones Compaq is also evaluating partnerships with manufacturers of pager devices and cellular phones so that it might deliver them to customers as well. They will likely come as part of a complete offering, which will help connect customers to data stored on their corporate network. [quote end]
I can not see how CPQ can possible compete against MOT, ERICY, NOK or now that Qualcomm has sold their (financial draining) handset division to Kyocera, Kyocera. Basically, there is just too much competition in the handset market already and I can think of nothing in the way of propriatory technology that CPQ could bring to this market that would generate revenues similar to what CDMA brings to QCOM even now that it has wiped its hands on manufacturing handsets themselves.
When I read that Compaq is contemplating getting into cell phones and beepers the first thing I thought was, "Is CPQ clutching at straws, basically saying they can not compete in their traditional markets and must try something else?"
The quote above uses the term, "partnership," yet for the life of me, I can not think why any of the big players I previously mentioned would see CPQ as being able to bring anything meaningful to a partnership--on any level.
Compaq might be trying to reinvent itself and not be showing either us, the shareholders, or anyone else all its cards, but cell phones and pagers is too much of a leap for me to view as anything but fool hardy at this time.
Cell phones? (shaking my head)
