Mike: You have written a careful analysis and it deserves an attempt to see whether there are some other ideas.

Voop has answered you (twice), so this is taking his answer into account.

The oldest (and shallowest) comparison is Betamax. Yes, the best technology is not enough.

Nothing in the wide range of Qualcomm initiatives comes even close to Betamax.

GSM is for voice. CDMA is for data.

W-CDMA is a camel which was put together by a committee of Euros to fight Qualcomm.

That fight is over - today. The evidence is carnage re:3G UMTS (WCDMA) and the GPRS path toward it.

Now what?

Where Voop is absolutely right IMO is that without the obvious difficulties of the GPRS "bridge" to UMTS (WCDMA), there would have been no point to Dr J's presence at Cannes, or his tour of Europe, or his "interview" with the Financial Times. No one could care less what he thought, if GPRS and WCDMA were hitting on all cylinders. They are not. So?

Asia (and to a lesser extent, the Americas) is where we look now.

(I for one, still expect zero for the Q in Europe in the short/medium term no matter what the Q's technological advantages are - but Europe is not the world.)

Suggest we see what happens in the wide wide world - with Asia (and particularly China) our focus.

Best.

Chaz (aka Cha2)
