I don't want this to be taken as a defense for Kerry but I ran the Boston Marathon in both 78 (Rosie's year) and 80. Both were warm years but not as warm as 77. Anyway I was what was known as a bandit, an unoffical runner as the qualifing time for under 40 was 2 hrs and 50 minutes.

There were plenty of unofficial runners but there was no way to know your place but one usually remembered their time (i was around 3:20 in 1978 and ugh around 4:05 in 1980).

In both cases I jumped in far up (say in 1978 about where the 1000 starter was out of 6,000 or so) so it only took a minute or so to reach the starting line. Most unoffical runners started @ the back and it could take 10 minutes to reach the starting line and still take a while after that to have room to really run. So sometimes people don't bother to keep track of the time. They just want to finish and say they've run Boston.
