About 2) — there were no foreign troops in many of the Eastern NATO members, including the Baltics. Some years ago, because of some unmemorable excuse, they placed foreign troops, in small numbers in some of those countries. Serving as tripwire. So, the promise of no foreign troops in Ukraine would probably not be acceptable. It would be better than nothing, though - at least, it would reflect the fact that it’s a concern.
Point 5) about winning the Cold War. Sounds cool, but it’s simply not true. I admire Ronald Reagan - but a few cool lines coming from him haven’t done it. Even the Star Wars haven’t done it. The reality is that the USSR bosses (like Gorby) and its population - got sick and tired of their hopelessly boring regime, of chronic economic stagnation, of the ideology that everyone had to profess - but hardly anyone took seriously. So, the USSR fell apart - on its own. Starting at the top. Lithuania pioneered the process - by being the first to proclaim independence. |
