Bob--yeah, I agree that Merrill's chief reason for establishing online selling of stocks was defensive, but I have no doubt that they're going to aggressively promote this effort and steal as many customers from other OLBs and get their share of new customers with no OLB. It would make no sense any other way, of course. I have a friend who works for SSB, and they don't allow him internet usage either, except for a handful of sites that he can use to research stocks (wonder if he has access to E*Trade??!!). Makes no sense to me--are they afraid these guys are going to chat rooms or something at work?
