Judge rules no patent violation by Covad
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Feb 22 (Reuters) - A federal district court judge ruled that Covad Communications Group Inc., which provides high-speed data lines, did not infringe a patent held by Bell Atlantic Corp. (NYSE:BEL - news), Covad said Tuesday.

Covad said it won a summary judgment on Feb. 18 in federal district court in Norfolk, Va. The ruling is subject to appeal, it said.

''This judgment is an important step in the exercise of our right to offer consumers a competitive alternative to Bell Atlantic,'' Dhruv Khanna, Covad executive vice president-general counsel, said in a statement.

Covad gave no details about the suit, and officials of the two companies were not available for comment.

Bell Atlantic filed the suit last year, about two weeks after Covad filed an antitrust and fraud law suit against Bell Atlantic in federal court in Washington. The Covad suit is still pending.
