Like Mearsheimer said, until recently we were the global hegemon of a unipolar world. Russia, historically, always acted independently - and was slowly but surely moving in that direction over the past 3 decades.

The plan, apparently, has been (and remains) regime change and “de-colonization” of Russia. In other words, a breakup. As the first step, it would have to be a big “Colonoscopy” - by bringing NATO deep, all the way to the East of Moscow, close to the former Stalingrad.

The Russians were very clear for many years - NATO in Ukraine meant war.

Stopping Ukraine from killing the Donetsk Russians was a priority - but not the only one.
