Why is "12 Years a Slave" rated (R)? It does show the breasts of some blouseless black women up for sale and a fairly restrained rape scene that is bested every night on TV, so I can only assume the (R) rating is due to the brutality of slavery and it's truthful depiction on screen.

Lynching runaways and lashing people until they have great bleeding "stripes" showing bone is pretty intense. In one scene Northup is forced to whip a fellow slave woman by his master, on pain of death.

So, I guess this film will not be one of the films in American History class.

I guess I keep going on about this movie because it stuck in my brain. I'd read about it, I'd imagined it, but seeing it on screen has a different effect.

I urge all you right-wing closet racists to go see it.
