No link, I am the dismal author.

My point was, not so much that crimes have been committed in the past, but that such crimes should be stopped, and the first step to improving the future is understanding the past. Once we understand how brittle monoculture is, we understand why diversity (of crops and cultures) needs to be preserved.

The 1840s potato famine decreased the population of Ireland from 8.6M to 6.5M. If someone, anyone (and it wouldn't have taken all that much effort) had been collecting a sampling of the hundreds of natural variants of potatoes in the Andes, that famine could have been avoided. But there was no understanding, so nobody did it.
