Perhaps a little culinary and ethnic identity correction is called for here.. Not really. 'Tartar' is and alternate spelling for 'Tatar'. Tarter sauce is a direct translation from the French for 'sauce tartare'. Now exactly why the Frogs connected that with the Tatars is unknown. Since they do consider snails to be a epicurean delight, well... I think their fondness for mushrooms and wine is at the root of this. Not so sure about you.
