France and Germany don't want, or need, to fight over the Saarland anymore.

Much of the grounds for European pissing matches have gone the way of history as Europe has become post-industrial, post-colonial, and rich and lazy enough to just buy what they want from abroad.

Realize that WW1 and WW2 were largely intra-European pissing matches over essentially colonialism within Europe. German and Austro-Hungarian imperialism was aimed at Central and Eastern Europe instead of abroad to Africa, like the Atlantic powers.
