Record snow hits DFW, tens of thousands lose electricity

DALLAS (AP) -- More than half-a million students in north Texas are off today due to winter conditions that left a record layer of snow in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Oncor reported 175,000 homes and businesses without power in the DFW area. Crews worked to restore electricity.

The all-time 24-hour snowfall record for Dallas-Fort Worth was broken as of 4 a.m. (central time) Friday, with 12.5 inches of snow.
The National Weather Service says the previous record was 12.1 inches set in 1962.

American Airlines spokesman Steve Schlachter told The Associated Press that the Fort Worth-based carrier had canceled about 240 flights today -- mostly in the Dallas area.

American's East Coast operations, still struggling to recover from days of winter storm conditions that backed up schedules, are returning to normal.

The snow-covered roof of a tire warehouse in west Dallas collapsed. No injuries were reported in an accident at a time when the store was closed. A gaping hole was in a section of the roof of the store, where thousands of tires are stored.

The snow began to taper off Friday as a winter storm warning remained in effect for parts of north Texas. Snowfall reports ranged from 6-14 inches.
