I hope you don't mind my jumping in here. I agree with your characterization of the Balkan mess. I wonder why this is not the opportunity for the Europeans to take charge of their own security issues. It is, after all, not our responsibility. If ground troops have to go in (seems likely), they should be European ground troops.

Hitler may have lost WW2 in the Balkans before he got to Russia.
