GE Sees Pickup In the Economy
In another sign that the economy is indeed rebounding, General Electric (GE) said yesterday that it is seeing a noticeable uptick in both its short and long cycle businesses. As recently as a few months ago, GE wasn't seeing any growth.

GE said orders in its industrial operations business have climbed 11% this quarter, while plastics orders are up 6%. Plastics, which is a very economically sensitive business, had seen its orders drop -3% year-to-date through Q3.

CEO Jeff Immelt also said longer cycle businesses such as aircraft engines and medical technology were pointing up. He was also upbeat about financial services, even with the prospects of higher rates. GE's hurting power turbine business should see its last down year in 2004.
