I disagree with Terry as to scope- but what he means (I think), is that everyone is affected by the foolishness that comes from the dark side of religious inclination- and it IS a product of affiliated believers- I don't think lone mystics do much harm until they gather a group.

If people kept their faith inside them, and didn't wander about bothering other people with it, or if they didn't become convinced that it's their holy mission to kill other people, or to do any of the other rather awful things religious people sometimes do (although I see religion broadly as a belief in ANYTHING to the extreme that you give up your critical thinking skills and cease to think for yourself) then I would be fine with religion. I don't UNDERSTAND the need for it, but I wouldn't WORRY about the religious at all. However since so many of them seem to need to take over (by making my children pray in school, by making them learn the 10 comandments- whatever) and control other people, outside the boundaries of their religion, by using legal machinery, and the authority of the state, I come to the conclusion that there is much to fear from organized religion and I don't see much benefit.
