Buffer states in this day and age are as pointless as the Maginot Line was in WWII and Putin knows that.

Tell that to Putin. Russia has always sought to have neutral territories between it and its perceived enemies. This isn't new...........it wasn't new when it was the Soviet Union. Its been going on for centuries. Its part of the Russian psyche.
