The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, Nov. 30, edition that several
bullish Internet articles about Biomira's new breast cancer therapy sent
its shares soaring nearly 30 per cent yesterday. The Globe's Leonard Zehr
writes that the www.worldlyinvestor.com Web site, in an article Friday
after the markets closed, suggested that Biomira was "exhibiting many of
the same qualities of the early QLT PhotoTherapeutics" and predicted that
Biomira "could be rags to riches, part 2." QLT's stock price has rocketed
to $66 from $18 this year on the strength of its new treatment for a
leading cause of blindness in the elderly. Biomira advanced $1.43 to $6.35
yesterday on the Toronto Stock Exchange. Another Internet financial
newsletter, www.bull-market.com, recently compared the success of the
Herceptin treatment for breast cancer to Biomira's Theratope vaccine, which
is being tested in a major premarketing "Phase III" clinical trial.
National Bank Financial analyst Cameron Groome says the ability of the
Internet to create wild swings in stock prices is "frightening."
