Susan Estrich (Dukakis's campaign chair) defended Bush's cousin, and said that he should not be a scapegoat for an industry rife with unethical behavior. She said that his behavior was far from being an example of how not to act as a journalist based on the industry-accepted norms. She also said that he was just as forthcoming with info to her when his uncle was running against Dukakis. She considers him to be very unbiased.

She said that he acted as most TV journalists act, and that there were many worse examples in the present day (i.e. the AP writer that called the Gore campaign to prevent the Gore concession).
