It is not that complicated. Putin was happy when his puppet was in control of Crimea because all of Russia's economic interests were secure. When that began to change he became aggressive and from his view justifiably so. Russia needs to control Crimea in order to export fossil fuel. Think about our reaction to the Persian Gulf coming under the administration of Persia (Iran) and it helps provide some perspective.

I'm not apologizing for him. Personally I think he is a corrupt thug and that has been my position on him for years.
