CompactFlash Association Announces 120th CompactFlash Design-In Win
CompactFlash Widens Its Lead As Small Form Factor Data Storage Card Standard
TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 23, 1997--The CompactFlash Association announced today at World PC Expo in Tokyo that CompactFlash has achieved over 120 design-in wins since its original introduction in 1994.
CompactFlash has now become the dominant small form factor data storage card standard.
CFA membership has now reached 82 companies covering all aspects of CompactFlash including host systems, connectors, packaging, design consulting, adapters, card reader/writers, production equipment, test equipment, ATA controllers and certified compliant CF cards.
Nelson Chan, SanDisk vice president of marketing, said, ``CompactFlash has clearly established itself as the leader in the small size storage card market with an 83 percent market share according to the 1996 InStat survey. SanDisk has recorded more than 100 design wins for its CompactFlash cards in applications ranging from digital cameras and handheld PCs to heart defibrillators, pay phone systems, GPS systems, printers, network routers and audio recorders.''
Anthony Carbone, non-volatile memory marketing manager, Hitachi America, Ltd., Semiconductor & I.C. Division, and marketing chairman for the CompactFlash Association stated, ``Today's announcement confirms CompactFlash has gained strong momentum in the market place. It is the only form factor that can meet customers' demands for density-intensive applications such as digital cameras -- a market growing at more than 50 percent year-to-year -- that require megapixel image quality. As the capacity leader with the highest density, small form-factor flash card, Hitachi currently offers 30MB CompactFlash cards with plans to ship higher densities before the end of the year.''
The CompactFlash storage card is an ultra-small, removable data storage system first introduced in 1994. CompactFlash, which meets all PCMCIA standards, can be easily slipped into a low cost, passive Type II adapter card which can then be used to move data, images and audio to any standard PC card slot in computers, printers, set-top boxes and other electronic platforms.
The CFA was founded in October 1995 by Apple Computer Inc., Canon, Eastman Kodak Company, Hewlett-Packard, LG Semicon, Matsushita (Panasonic), Motorola, NEC, Polaroid, SanDisk, Seagate and Seiko Epson. The CFA now has 82 member companies.
The CompactFlash Association is a non-profit, mutual-benefit corporation that promotes adoption of CompactFlash as a worldwide, ultra-small, removable storage standard for capturing and transporting digital data, audio and images. The CFA makes the CompactFlash, CFA logo and CF logo trademarks and technical specification available royalty-free to member companies. The CFA also provides a Compliance Test Package to assure compatibility and interchangeability of all CompactFlash cards. The CFA is headquartered in Palo Alto, Calif.
