Milestones in Iraq

The war in Iraq ground on, a mixture of hope, despair, and progress against a grim backdrop of attacks against civilians, officials, and U.S. and Iraqi forces. The trial of former dictator Saddam Hussein began in July. In October, nearly 10 million Iraqi voters turned out to pass a draft constitution, and turnout appeared to be even higher in December's election. But violence shadowed the country. October marked a somber threshold as the number of U.S. soldiers killed reached 2,000. The insurgents proved to be an unrelenting and hauntingly self-renewing force. Nearly 1,000 Shiite Muslims were killed in a stampede in late August in northern Baghdad -- a panic that may have been sparked by rumors of a suicide bomber.
