JFQ:
My sentiments exactly, except for the part about Jefferson/Hamilton. You know as well as I that no human is perfect, they can only nobly strive for perfection. Is it attainable? Perhaps to humans 100,000 years from now (discounting backslides every few centuries, or millennia as has been the case in the past).
Frivolity aside, even "Saintly" Ayn had her faults AND she was sometimes illogical and did not always live up to her own philosophy -- but that does not make the great bulk of her work valid. Believe me -- if more people in America today understood and tried to live up to the values and morality she outlined, this country would be a much more productive HAPPIER place. More respect for individuals amongst themselves too.
The Constitution was not a wasted effort if we return to it. We, you and I and others have a moral duty to the greatness that is within each of us to create a second "Enlightenment" and strive to return what was precious, good, and TRULY moral to this country. It is only impossible if we think it is impossible.
I say, it is not impossible. The 21st century can be more exciting and more fulfilling than any century preceding it in America, if we work to make it so and name the evils we see for what they are and work against them. If we fail, if we make excuses, if we become apathetic, if we do not cry "If this goes on. . .!" then the guilty are us, and the 21st century will only be fit for cattle, human robots and parrots.
We can make a difference. There are more of us who "see" today than there were in 1776.
