Mighty little info to judge the situation.
Someone with a guilty conscience calls call home for help, without knowing he or she did anything wrong in complaining about an assignment, but worried about what the (unknown) consequences may be.

No charges, no jail, not even knowing whether a valid order was given by a non-com or whoever.

Were they lacking guns or other defences they could reasonably expect. Apparently they lacked armor but was that against regulations to have none or little.

Seems a very local dispute that should not have caused a stir in the Press .
