>> George White, director of voice technology, General Magic "GMI Voice-Enabled Internet Services" This talk focuses on what General Magic has learned as a pioneer in developing Telephony VUIs. General Magic specializes in Telephony "VUIs with personality" which, in the beginning, it struggled to craft without the advantage of VUI development tools. Now tools such as the Natural Language Speech Assistant from Unisys, Voyager with Speech Objects from Nuance and DialogModules from SpeechWorks can reduce VUI development times by 80%. In addition, VoiceXML, proposed jointly by IBM, Lucent, AT&T and Motorola, will soon further reduce development time and cost. A short explanation of these VUI development tools will be given. Furthermore, the psychological theory behind "VUIs with personality" will be presented along with a demonstration of myTalk which embodies the theory. Finally, the impact of VoIP, WAP and Bluetooth on the future of Telephony VUIs will be noted. <<
It appears that GMGC sees many of these developments as assets that will make their product offerings more easy to develop, improve, and deliver to market. There has been some debate in the past as to whether some of them were going to make GMGC's technology less important. Clearly, this is not the company's view. Of, course, these tools may also reduce lead time for those on GMGC's heals.
It still comes down to execution, and the fact that GMGC's products are commercially available today for those who want a top end VUI. I believe we will see many other deals for voice enabled services involving companies other than GMGC, because a lot of applications don't require the sophistication of magicTalk. Those deals will continue to attract interest to the field, and that will benefit GMGC.
