The civil war as fought for a number of reasons, but the biggest one was slavery. Constitutionally at the time the south had the right to impose slavery, but of course it was a tremendous injustice. The southern states had a constitutional right to run themselves as slaves states, but doing so was an enormous and horrible infringement on the human rights of millions of slaves.

Whether the south had a constitutional right to secede is in a certain sense still an open issue, but in practical terms it (and likely any other future secession attempts should the issue arise again) were settled by the civil war. Also even if one figures they did had such a constitutional right they were exercising it in support of an evil cause. Not purely for that cause, but it's the biggest reason. It don't accept the claim that a few make, that it was mostly about tariffs or any of the other secondary issues.
