NEW YORK, Feb 15 (Reuters) - Compaq Computer Corp. CPQ on Tuesday unveiled a three-stage strategy to sell a new class of powerful computers suitable for businesses, based on Microsoft Corp.'s MSFT Windows 2000 software and technology supplied by Unisys Corp. UIS .

Compaq's so-called "eGeneration" strategy is aimed at fulfilling the company's promise of technology capable of replacing mainframe-level computers with machines based on Intel chips.

The products are geared toward the new market of Web-based businesses, with large numbers of users simultaneously accessing huge amounts of data.

The first phase in the new strategy began in August, when Compaq offered its ProLiant servers based on eight Intel chips. The Houston-based computer maker has also developed other technologies, such as multi-terabyte storage, as part of this first stage.

In the second half of this year, Compaq will build servers, based on Unisys' mainframe-class technologies, allowing Compaq to offer computers capable of running 32 Intel processors simultaneously. Next year, Compaq said it will begin to offer ProLiant servers that can run more than one of these machines at a time.

Compaq and Microsoft will coordinate within Compaq's Windows 2000 Datacenter Program, to carry out testing, offer joint support and coordinate both hardware and software upgrades among customers. Microsoft is to unveil its upgraded software on Thursday.
