The dollar cost isn't the only cost. Reading a book takes time. I could spend that time reading another book, or on SI, or watching TV, or exercising or whatever. The book isn't just competing against books with different conclusions about global warming, but with books about other topics, and with other activities.

I'm skeptical enough about the idea that the mid latitudes of the earth will be uninhabitable withing 50 years that I count the conclusion to be mild evidence against the book being worthy of my time. It isn't strong evidence, reconsidering your thoughts and ideas is often worthwhile, but considering there are millions of choice in how to spend my time, even a weak argument against the book can be enough to keep me from ever reading it. My original conclusion in this area could be rebutted, but I would need a large part of the rebuttal BEFORE I would read the book, either that or I would need additional arguments supporting the book.

He's written scientific papers - So have many other people. And many writers of good books have not. Its not much of a counter argument.

Originator of the Gaia hypothesis - To me that's a zero as a counter argument.
