Fallujah Hots Up : Sadr City Searches Begin Monday
By Alan Brain - Command Post

From the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) : United States warplanes are continuing to pound the Iraqi city of Fallujah as American troops on the ground reinforce their positions all around the rebel-held city.Mortars have also been fired into the hotel used by journalists and foreign contractors in Baghdad and insurgents have fired a mortar round at an arms collection point in the Sadr City district of the capital. The latest reports from Fallujah speak of tank battles and a resumption of overnight air strikes. It is understood that US tanks at the edge of the city are pounding rebel positions. Insurgents hit back with mortars and rocket-propelled grenades and there are now reports of further US air strikes on the city. The US is trying to step up the pressure and have slightly tightened their cordon around the city. Mortars landed near a packed stadium in Baghdad’s Shiite slum of Sadr City, where hundreds were turning in weapons as part of an arms-for-cash initiative aimed at disarming radical cleric Moqtada Sadr’s movement. As the mortars hit near the stadium, the Iraqi Government announced that the police and national guard would start conducting searches Monday to rid the teeming slum of 2.5 million people of weapons. “A mortar shell fell near the stadium, there were victims,” said tribal leader Sheikh Karim al-Bakhati, a go-between between the Americans and the Sadr movement, adding a suspect had been arrested. It was not clear how many were injured. Meanwhile, Iraqi National Security Advisor Kassem Daoud said searches of Sadr City would begin on Monday....
