IS ANOTHER WORLD CLASS DIAMOND DISCOVERY UNFOLDING IN CANADA?
Ashton Mining Claims Significant, Preliminary Diamond Discovery in Northern Quebec
Every few years, a Canadian mining company discovers a world-class mineral deposit that not only launches them into the spotlight, but also creates its own stage and theatre, spilling onto the newspaper headlines and into the mainstream news channels. Such discoveries electrify markets, create staking rushes and spawn suddenly new millionaires.
Dia Met Minerals first discovered diamonds in Canada’s North and has established that country’s first diamond mine. Dia Met has since been acquired by BHP Billiton Group (BHP) and anticipates gross revenues of $8 billion (est.) over the life of its Ekati Diamond Mine. Diamond production is still new to Canada. From one world class discovery, Canada now ranks #7 in total diamond production (in millions of carats), #6 in the aggregate dollar value of that diamond production and #5 in dollar value per carat produced. Jewelry stores carry diamonds that once were but a gleam in the eye of an intrepid geologist pursuing a dream of discovery in Canada’s Northwest Territories.
Speculators shrewd enough to invest during the early phase of such discoveries have been rewarded with gains of 1000% or more!
Where does Ashton Mining (TSE: ACA) stand in its potential for a world-class diamond discovery? Will this company’s recent diamond-bearing kimberlites result in another major Canadian diamond mine, such as the multi-billion dollar Ekati mine…and in doing so bring a tremendous windfall to its early investors? While the company’s share price has jumped more than 400% from its September 2001 base, is there more of an upside climb left from the current levels? We aim to provide some answers and insight to these questions.
The Ashton Mining story, like most overnight successes, has been in the making for nearly a decade. Exploration is a slow, meticulous and often disappointing process. By the time that a company, such as Ashton, appears in a newsletter such as this, they have overcome the trials and setbacks, just to survive at all, and have discovered something substantial that it can become an investment opportunity.
The company has diamond exploration prospects across Canada. Ashton has been a leading diamond exploration throughout the 1990s. The company’s majority shareholder, British-based Rio Tinto plc (RTP), is one of the world’s leading metals and mining conglomerates. After the announcement of Ashton’s recent diamond discovery, Rio Tinto increased its beneficial ownership percentage, through a further cash infusion into the Ashton, to 63.8% of the company. That’s the FIRST clue that Ashton is hot on the trail to a potentially Elephant-sized diamond discovery. Ashton’s exploration areas, known as the Coronation, may be one of the hottest exploration areas on the planet.
We believe, through news releases issued by Ashton Mining of Canada, and our own due diligence in this area, that preliminary results of multiple diamond discoveries in the north Slave craton region of Nunavut, and the Otish Mountains region of Quebec are sufficiently encouraging to provide a speculative trading opportunity in Ashton Mining and related companies in this emerging area play for the rest of 2002.
Ashton Mining may become the next big success story. We will be following up with a more in-depth report on Ashton Mining in the coming week!
