I don't think that they did. We have a fairly long boarder with Canada (even in 1812). If Canada was involved in burning down the White House in 1812, I would have expected the Americans back then to return the favor, so to speak.

Just a few years later in the 1850's we used the undefined southern borders of the Texas Republic to as a justification to attack Mexico and we aquired California in the process.

Any military attack upon the US by Canada back then and you all would probably be speaking American today.
