market makers do not accumulate stock. They fill orders. They also trade for their own account. But it's for the 1/8s and 1/16s, see this months Forbes for a better idea of who's doing what for the money. Market makers do not have a grand scheme, they go out flat each night and they do not put their positions at risk, therefore any stock they hold for investment is usually locked up in positions such as conversions and reverse conversions. I believe people really underestimate the motive of a market maker. It's not to make a killing by betting which way a stock will move, it's to make a killing 1/8 at a time.
