That article mentions WINSTON research surveys.

I got my first survey call several months ago, and the survey-taker was kind enough to tell me who the survey company was (Winston), and how many wanted to ask questions vs those who refused -- about 10%. He had no idea what Winston did to try to eliminate self-selection by for example, GOP'ers who might be more motivated to answer.

Here's an example (see slide 21) of the loaded questions being asked in such surveys, and why they lead GOP astray (as well as news media and the public):

"Which do you prefer? (a)tax cut package of $726 billion that creates 1.4 million jobs or (b) $350 million that creates 700,000 jobs?"

Duh. The only problem of course is that both are lies, and neither creates the jobs as declared, as anyone knew at the time and is being proven 6 months later.

Reading that slide show and this confidential memo of April of this year shows the wild inaccuracies that the GOP insiders accept for their internal propaganda.

The worst part is how the GOP so completely depends on Winston-type PR for its policy decisions -- note the most important proposition of is "BRAND IMAGE" of the GOP vs the Democrats...

This explains a lot. This lockstep "BRAND IMAGE" mentality among Republicans means if they don't wake up they'll go down with the ship as Bush crashes and burns, attempting to take America with them.

If that happens it will destroy GOP credibility for many years, which would be as bad for our country as their successful attempts at destroying Democrat credibility.
