Disaster looms for Congress -BBC

If the predictions are correct, it will be Congress's worst result in more than 50 years.
====================
Results from the Indian general election suggest the Hindi Nationalist BJP will win a second term in power, while the opposition Congress Party could be heading for a disastrous result.

BJP leader Atal Behari Vajpayee is set to continue as prime minister while Mrs Gandhi, widow of the assassinated former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, could become opposition leader if she chooses.

But projections from the votes counted so far give Mrs Gandhi's Congress Party and its allies only 137 seats in the new parliament. The BJP coalition would have 292 seats - 20 more than it needs for a majority - while other parties would win 107 seats..........

But Congress spokesman Kapil Sibal admitted there was no chance that the Congress party to be invited to form the next Indian Government.

"There is no doubt that they (BJP alliance) will be called by the president to form a government," he said.
