I have been with the software industry for over 15 years and the cost of software (for just one example) is due to R&D and then followed by COGS (cost of goods). (Marketing and Sales always exist so I will skip that one here)

If I the software developer can get my software out without the COGS I will be much much happier and richer because I don't have to deal with vendor issues, outdated product, high cost of printing, distribution issues and associated transportation costs.

Don't think CompUSA's (Retails) and a whole bunch of wholesale distributors don't take a cut out of my profit. It can easily exceed 40%- 60% and sometime much higher if your not a large company.

Software is just one example, this will apply to all media as POST 7857 will explain.

I only offer MHO from EXPERIENCE from working with both small and large software companies.
