ALAMEDA, CALIFORNIA, U.S.A., 1997 JUL 31 (NB) -- By Newsbytes Staff. Firewalls are becoming increasingly popular with companies that allow remote access to in-house corporate networks over the Internet. Now Ascend Communications Inc. [NASDAQ:ASND] has announced the Firewall Control Manager. According to the company, the software tool "integrates the functionality" of its Secure Access Firewall "with popular user authentication technologies, available through Ascend Access Control, to allow remote users to gain appropriate access to resources that lie beyond the corporate firewall." Firewall Control Manager reportedly allows for the defining and implementing of custom security policies that give authorized remote users or remote user groups "dynamic access through the firewall for the duration of a remote access session." The company says Firewall Control Manager is designed to optimize intracompany access to intranet resources over the wide area network (WAN) and to "simplify and safeguard" extranet applications. Potential users can test the Firewall Control Manager at the company's Web site at ascend.com . Firewall Control Manager is available now for Solaris and NT platforms, and is included at no extra charge with Ascend Access Control .
