I think we just dump the tax exemption for churches. What is the basis for that?

To an extent it there for the same reason as the exemption for other non profit organization. Also it could be argued for on separation of church and state grounds. If the government has to much power to tax and regulate churches then separation of church and state is only one way or really not separate at all
