You are correct that anticipation of the future is a key survival skill. As always, a simple answer to a complex question is invariable not correct. Perhaps I should have said that the common notion is one of fate, that the future can be known because it has to unfold in a certain way, not that it is just likely to do so. Even that does not catch all the ifs and buts.
